How to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy?

Bringing a new life to the world is blissful, and it all starts with pregnancy. Though it is an out-of-the-world experience, the mother has to go through extensive physiological and psychological changes throughout the period. So, it can sometimes get very rough and problematic for some mothers, and new moms face this problem due to a lack of awareness.

This article will walk you through the everyday pregnancy time events and the essential things you need to do to ensure a healthy mother and baby.

Pregnancy period.

Many people believe that pregnancy lasts for ten months. But, a normal pregnancy usually lasts for nine calendar months or ten lunar months. Most obstetricians prefer to express the pregnancy duration in weeks. So, a standard or term pregnancy lasts at least thirty-seven complete weeks up to forty-two weeks.

Exceptional cases

A pregnancy can terminate anytime during this period. If the mother experiences labor pain and deliver the product of conception before thirty-seven weeks, then it is preterm labor, and we call the baby a premature baby. Here, we have to make sure the pregnancy lasts more than twenty-eight weeks. It is the minor age of viability.

If a pregnancy lasts more than forty-two weeks without any sign of labor, it is familiar as post-term pregnancy. Usually, primigravida or the women giving birth for the first time can experience this phenomenon. Many people still believe that post-term pregnancy is good as the baby gets more nutrition from the mother.

But, it can cause severe fetal distress and even intrauterine fetal death. So, if your expected date of delivery crosses over, then consult your gynecologist and obstetrician without any delay.

If the fetus or the product of conception comes out of the uterus through a natural orifice or surgical procedure before the likely age, it will be a clear case of abortion. Most people believe that abortion is an inducable process only. But, it can occur spontaneously also.

Ante-Natal Check-up

The period of pregnancy is famous as the ante-Natal period in clinical terms. According to the trusted statistics of WHO, you can reduce maternal mortality rates and chances of prematurity by many folds only through proper ante-Natal check-ups. It means screening out the high-risk mothers in the early pregnancy and treating the symptoms throughout the pregnancy to ensure a healthy baby and mother.

WHO recommendations

According to the WHO recommendations, a pregnant mother should visit her nearest health center or emergency outdoor to confirm her pregnancy after a missed period and history of sexual exposure. Some primary clinical check-ups will assess her condition once the doctors confirm the pregnancy through the serum beta HCG levels. This follow-up process will continue throughout her pregnancy and last up to forty-two days after the birth.

Check up schedule

A mother should go for follow-up visits at least once in three months till her seven months of pregnancy. Then the visits should increase in frequency and require one visit per two months. It will continue up to the eighth month of pregnancy. Once the ninth month starts, one should visit the obstetrician or the primary physician every week until delivery.

Delivery preparation

A mother and the family should start preparing for the delivery from the beginning of the thirty-seventh week. It includes managing at least one donor for the delivery if the mother needs an operative procedure while giving birth. Then, you should pack the mother’s necessary clothes, personal hygiene items, and baby care items.

When the labor pain hits, no one will have time to manage these small things, so it is better to prepare earlier.
